Meshell Ndegeocello (born Michelle Lynn Johnson, August 29, 1968) is an American bassist, singer-songwriter and producer raised in Washington, D.C.; her adopted surname is Swahili for 'free as a bird'. Signed to Maverick Records after Madonna saw her perform, she debuted in 1993 with 'Plantation Lullabies' and became a key figure in 1990s neo-soul, freely blending funk, jazz, soul and hip-hop. She won the inaugural Grammy for Best Alternative Jazz Album
