How the 202 US EDM festivals split by sound, and where each one is going

Bass is quietly the engine of the US festival circuit. On paper house leads the tags, but bass and dubstep power the destination camping festivals people travel for. The Excision and Subtronics axis (Lost Lands in Ohio, Bass Canyon at the Gorge, Thunderdome in Tacoma) has turned heavy dubstep and riddim into a whole touring economy, and it clusters in the Pacific Northwest and Midwest, not the coasts.

House is having its mainstream moment. Tech house and the house revival (John Summit, Dom Dolla, FISHER) moved from clubs onto main stages, which is why it is the most common tag but rarely the whole festival. It concentrates in California and the big cities.

Techno is smaller but city-bound and rising. Fewer dedicated festivals, but a warehouse and day-party scene in New York, Los Angeles, Detroit and Miami feeds the underground and the Detroit-rooted revival. Drum and bass, UK-rooted, is the fastest-rising crossover sound of the last two seasons.

HiJinx brings Subtronics, Excision b2b Wooli and DJ Diesel indoors to Philly for New Year

HiJinx Festival returns to the Pennsylvania Convention Center in Philadelphia on 30 and 31 December. The bill is headed by Subtronics, Tape B, Dabin and Shaquille O'Neal's DJ Diesel, with back-to-back sets from Excision and Wooli and from Ray Volpe and Sullivan King.

Lost Lands filled Legend Valley again: three sold-out days of bass

Excision's Lost Lands returned to Legend Valley in Thornville, Ohio from 18 to 20 September and sold out. The festival published full set times before the gates and streamed the main stage through its Couch Lands livestream for anyone who could not make the drive.
