American Folk Festival

The American Folk Festival brought free traditional and folk arts programming to the Bangor waterfront every August from 2002 through 2019, an outgrowth of the National Folk Festival's three-year residency in the city. Multiple outdoor stages ran music, dance and craft demonstrations spanning genres from Cajun and zydeco to Inuit throat singing, Rwandan drumming and Quebecois fiddle, with no admission ticket required and a suggested per-person donation supporting the nonprofit that ran it. At its peak in the late 2000s it drew well over 100,000 attendees across a weekend, making it one of the larger free folk-arts gatherings in New England

Attendees consistently praised the sheer variety and quality of the touring folk and traditional acts, frequently naming genres from Haitian music to Western swing to Cajun and zydeco as reasons they returned year after year, and several described building annual trips or vacations around the weekend. The donation-only entry was widely called excellent value for a full day or weekend of programming, and the crowd and staff were often described as unusually friendly

The final edition ran August 23-25, 2019 on a reduced footprint of three stages and 14 acts, down from six stages and 24 acts a decade earlier. Attendees that year reported the free parking shuttle to Bass Park had been discontinued in favor of paid lots, the suggested donation had risen from roughly $10 to $25, and food offerings leaned more toward standard fair fare with less of the ethnic variety the event had been known for. The organization announced that November that it was dissolving and would not hold a future edition, and several long-time attendees who had returned every year for a decade or more described feeling nostalgic and sorry to see it end
