Age, licensing and hygiene
The only age rule the organizer states is that children under 12 enter free with a paying adult, and a military discount is offered at the door with military ID. The site publishes no minimum age to be tattooed or pierced. In Virginia, tattooing or body-piercing a minor generally requires the presence and consent of a parent or guardian, so anyone under 18 planning to be tattooed should expect ID and consent checks from the individual artist
The organizer publishes no licensing, sterilization, consent or aftercare requirement anywhere on the site read on 5 September 2026. This is an absence of organizer statements, not an absence of rules: the venue is in Arlington, Virginia, and every artist tattooing or piercing there is bound by Virginia's body-art regulation, which the organizer does not mention
The organiser publishes nothing on Any organizer statement on artist licensing or bloodborne-pathogen certification, Any sterilization, single-use or workstation standard, Any organizer consent form or aftercare sheet, Any first aid, medical or security arrangement and Any minimum age to be tattooed or pierced. Ask the artist you are booking with, and expect a licensed booth to answer without hesitating.

What's special
The DC Tattoo Expo is a large hotel-based invitational, billed as the 15th annual show and advertising over 220 invite-only tattooers alongside manufacturers, vendors and local craftsmen. Despite the DC name it is physically in Arlington, Virginia, at the DoubleTree by Hilton Crystal City, near Reagan National Airport. The weekend pairs a public tattoo and piercing floor with a busy contest programme and a main-stage entertainment lineup that in 2026 includes Jim Maltman, Camille Zamboni, Captain and Maybelle, and Cervena Fox. The contest rules are concrete: Tattoo of the Day and Best of Show must be completed at the expo, most other categories are open to any qualifying tattoo, registration closes 30 minutes before contest time, and a Sunday block adds artist-only flash, fine art and skate-deck categories. New for 2026 are a DC Cherry Blossom Beauty Contest and a first-ever DC Dog patriotic pet competition, alongside the returning Miss DC Pin Up. Admission is sold online or at the door, a day at a time or as a $75 weekend pass, with under 12s free with a paying adult and a military discount at the door
What happens on the floor
The core format: artists take a booth for the weekend and work on the open floor, with the public walking through.
Pieces go on in the open, start to finish. You can watch, and talk to artists between clients.
Piercers work alongside the tattoo booths. The same questions apply: age, ID, sterilisation and aftercare.
Teaching sessions aimed at working artists. Usually ticketed separately from admission.
Finished and same-day work is judged on stage in named categories, usually late in the day.
Getting tattooed here
Admission gets you through the door, not into a chair. Tattoo work is arranged with the artist, not with the show.
The floor is an invited-artist floor open to the public during show hours. The organizer does not publish a pre-booking system or per-artist availability; visitors arrange work with artists at their booths
Who is tattooing
No artist roster has been published for this edition, so there is no way to pick an artist in advance from the official pages.
No 2026 artist roster is published. The artists page reads 'Here are the artists that attended in 2025. Stay Tuned for our 2026 list!' and lists roughly 90 studio and shop names from the 2025 edition, not individual artist names or Instagram handles. Those 2025 names are recorded in lineup_edition_note and are not staged as the 2026 lineup. So the only 2026 artist information a visitor has before arriving is the over-220 invited-tattooer headline

What it costs
Admission is the only price the show sets. No tattoo prices are published, and none should be inferred. Each invited artist sets their own rate at their own booth. The site says visitors can be tattooed and pierced at the show but publishes no minimum, hourly range or guidance figure. Whatever the artist you approach charges. Budget for it as an unknown.
Extras, bought separately
DC Tattoo Expo T-Shirt: Merchandise sold on the ticket page, not an admission product
Miss DC Pin Up Contest entry: Contest entry fee paid by whoever enters, not admission and not the price of a tattoo
Every admission price here is on the ticket page and is sold both online and at the door. The two non-admission money items on this record are fenced above: the $30 Miss DC Pin Up entry and the $25 T-shirt. Neither is a gate price. Note the within-site price conflict recorded in pricing.price_conflict_note

What the organiser or venue publishes about getting around, and what they do not.
The only admission age rule the organizer publishes is that children under 12 enter free with a paying adult. No minimum age to attend and no minimum age to be tattooed or pierced is stated anywhere on the site. Anyone planning to be tattooed should treat the artist's own ID and age requirements, and Virginia state law at the Arlington venue, as the governing rules
Confirm your specific needs with the organiser's access team before you travel.
