What happened to Freaknik?
Aggressive Atlanta police crackdowns beginning in the mid-1990s, following thousands of citations and hundreds of arrests, drove attendance down from a record 200,000 in 1994 to about 50,000 by 1999; by 2000 the annual HBCU spring-break street party had ended, and Black college spring-break crowds shifted to destinations like Daytona Beach (Atlanta Magazine).
