The Jimmy Jam BBQ Slam bills itself as the largest barbecue event in Northeast Florida, a one-day nonprofit festival at the St. Johns County Fairgrounds in Elkton on January 9, 2027, its 11th year. More than 60 teams compete in the BBQ People's Choice and 15 or more in chili and chowder, alongside a car show for classic cars, trucks and motorcycles, a cornhole tournament and live music from local and regional country, rock and blues acts. It is named for James Wray, known as Jimmy Jam, who ran the Betty Griffin House thrift store, and the money raised goes to individuals and families in need in the community.
How it works
General admission is $15 at early bird pricing, and live music is included. Tasting is paid with $1 tokens: chili and chowder run from 11 am to 3 pm, with one voting token for every $10 spent, and barbecue from 2 pm to 4 pm, with one voting token for every $20 spent, and the votes decide the People's Choice awards. The cornhole tournament is a $25-a-person blind draw, with sign-ups from 10 am and play from 11 am.
