What's special
Billed as the largest annual event in Maine's Piscataquis County, the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival packs one June day at the Piscataquis Valley Fairgrounds with the state's iconic dessert. Guests buy tokens in the baker area to sample whoopie pies in a wide range of creative flavor combinations and vote for their favorites, while more than 100 arts, crafts and food vendors and live music fill out the grounds. Early risers can start with the "Earn Your Whoopie Pie" 3K race or walk at 8 a.m., and the festival runs rain or shine from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m

The appeal is the tasting itself: guests move from baker to baker trying inventive whoopie-pie flavors and casting votes in the contest, an event popular enough to draw roughly 9,000 people to Dover-Foxcroft
