The experience
What's special
Windy City Witch Fest calls to, in its own words, all witchy folk, psychics, tarotists, occultists, and everyone in between, and packs them into one room: the Erin Room on the 4th floor of the Irish American Heritage Center, Chicago's Irish cultural center in Irving Park. Over two October days the floor mixes named readers with a genuinely odd and specific market. You can get read by a psychic medium, book a 10 minute astrology reading for $20, have your fortune read in cheese by the fest's self-billed one of a kind tyromancer, or browse hand-bound artisan brooms, ritual oils made to the lunar calendar, cemetery history tours, gothic chainmail and crystal stalls. Tickets are $10 a day, kids under 14 are free, and the fest is all ages with a bar for the grown-ups
What it costs
Two layers, both mostly published, which is rare for this branch. Layer one, the door, is a flat $10 per day on Eventbrite, one listing per day, so a full weekend is $20; kids under 14 are free. Layer two, the tables, is priced by each reader and vendor, and one reader publishes a rate on the official listing itself: Leslie of Archive Astrology, 10 minute astrology readings for $20. Everything else at the tables is unpublished. The bar takes its own payments, and no outside food or drink is allowed
Getting in
What a reading costs
The $10 day ticket covers the floor for that day only; the two days are separate tickets. It includes no reading and no purchase Eventbrite processing fees, if any, are not stated on the site. Card acceptance at tables varies by vendor. The bar sells drinks for purchase and outside food and drink are not allowed
What is on offer
A reader interprets a spread of tarot cards with you, usually one to one at a booth or table.
Similar to tarot but using an oracle deck, whose cards and meanings vary by deck.
A medium describes what they say are messages from people who have died.
Your birth date, time and place are used to draw and discuss an astrological chart.
Stones are placed on or around the body during a rest session.
Marked stones or tiles are cast and read as a spread.
