Jason Moran (born January 21, 1975, in Houston, Texas) is an American jazz pianist, composer and educator who turned to music after discovering Thelonious Monk. He studied with pianist Jaki Byard at the Manhattan School of Music, joined saxophonist Greg Osby's band, and signed to Blue Note Records, releasing his debut "Soundtrack to Human Motion" in 1999. Combining post-bop and avant-garde jazz with blues, stride piano, classical and hip-hop, Moran was named a MacArthur Fellow in 2010 and served as Artistic Director for Jazz at the Kennedy Center from 2011 to 2025
