Pretty Lights is the project of American electronic music producer Derek Vincent Smith, who is from Fort Collins, Colorado. His music relies heavily on digital sampling, combining hip-hop beats, synths, and vintage funk and soul. He built an early following by releasing several albums as free downloads.
