The experience
What's special
The American Royal World Series of Barbecue bills itself as the largest barbecue competition in the world, drawing more than 600 teams and tens of thousands of spectators to Kansas City for a three-day showdown of competition cooking. It is the American Royal's largest annual fundraiser, with proceeds directed to the organization's food and agriculture education mission, and it now runs from a new roughly 80-acre campus at State Avenue and 118th Street, just northwest of Kansas Speedway. Alongside the sanctioned team competition, the public-facing weekend layers in vendors, live music, a Friday-night concert, a Saturday walking tour and BBQ education, and the Barbecue Hall of Fame induction
What people love
Enthusiasts describe the sheer scale of the world's largest barbecue contest as a spectacle worth seeing, and point to the Friday programming described as the fun night, with numerous events and a concert as the high point of the public weekend. A more relaxed Saturday walking tour that lets visitors meet certain teams, sample their food, and learn about competition barbecue also draws praise. A recurring caveat runs alongside this, however: many attendees feel the event rewards those who are competing or who know a team well enough to be invited into a private tent, and that general public visitors expecting to graze on the competition barbecue may come away underwhelmed

Kansas City's metro-wide vacation-rental market is sizeable; a competition-focused event like this draws fewer spectators than a music festival, so surge pricing is generally milder than at large concerts
Search Airbnb →The event's own camping is reserved for competing barbecue teams with paid team spaces, not open to spectators; Hipcamp is not a realistic option for general visitors here

What the organiser or venue publishes about getting around, and what they do not.
Checked americanroyal.com on 3 Sep 2026: the World Series of Barbecue event page and its FAQ, Plan Your Visit, Contact, the BBQ FAQs and rodeo FAQs, plus the page sitemap and guessed /accessibility, /ada and /faq paths. No accessibility statement, no terrain or surface description, no accessible parking or drop off, no accessible toilet or viewing information, no companion ticket policy and nothing on shuttles. Two things to flag rather than an access fact: the 2026 event has moved to the new American Royal campus at State Avenue and 118th Street, Kansas City, Kansas, an approximately 80 acre site whose permanent address will be 1899 American Royal Way, Kansas City KS 66109 and whose temporary construction address is 11602 State Avenue; and the organiser states that because of ongoing construction the 2026 World Series of Barbecue is a limited on-site experience for invited guests only, with no main stage and no public activities. Organiser contact for access questions is the general line 816-221-9800 or the contact form at americanroyal.com/contact
Confirm your specific needs with the organiser's access team before you travel.
