What's special
DrachenFest US is a week-long, high-fantasy festival LARP held each June at Cooper's Lake Campground in Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania, and inspired by Germany's long-running DrachenFest. Hundreds of players become original fantasy characters, join one of five dragon camps or the neutral Bazaar, and compete in massive battles and sieges within an immersive, player-driven sandbox. Admission covers four days of gameplay plus early arrival and includes a tent spot, with RV hookups, tent/yurt rentals, and a youth Drake Academy program available.
What people love
Attendees describe an intensely immersive, welcoming community where 'buying in' to the roleplay pays off, and repeatedly call it unlike any other LARP. Many highlight the collaborative, self-directed sandbox and the camp-versus-camp play. Do I need a costume?
Newcomers are told a first kit can be simple and inexpensive: at minimum a plain natural-fiber tunic and bottoms, a cloak or blanket, sturdy non-modern shoes, and a wood or ceramic dish and mug. Rough, home-sewn or layered basics are welcomed, and tent/costume rentals are available for those who don't want to build a full kit
Costume rules
A high-fantasy festival LARP: attendees create an original fantasy character and are asked to wear complete fantasy costumes reminiscent of any pre-1700s period, keep modern items out of sight, and help maintain the illusion. As of 2025 the event is 'fantasy concepts only' (no direct real-world history-only or post-Georgian/steampunk kits). Enforcement is described as relaxed, with safety and accessibility always taking precedence

How do I get to DrachenFest US?

From PIT the campground is roughly a 50-mile, one-hour drive north via I-79. Rideshare pickup at PIT is a designated point across the road from Door 7 on the Ground Level; taxis queue outside baggage claim. There is no transit, rail, or festival shuttle out to Slippery Rock, so a rideshare covers the whole trip, but for a week-long campout with gear, most fly-in players rent a car instead. Book a confirmed return ride ahead, as drivers are sparse this far north of the city
