The experience
What's special
El Grito Portland is a free, two-day celebration of Latino culture held each September at the Rose Quarter in Portland, Oregon. The festival centers live mariachi and regional-Mexican music, Folklorico dancers in vivid traditional dress and the official 'Grito' independence ceremony, alongside a culinary journey through Latin America and the Poderosas Pavilion showcasing Latina-owned businesses. Admission is free and the event doubles as a community hub, offering health resources and family programming
Last time around (2025)
El Grito Portland was celebrated on September 15, 2025 at the Rose Quarter, with organizers adding some online components amid community concerns about federal immigration enforcement. Coverage framed the 2025 edition as a display of solidarity and cultural pride carried out in a 'spirit of joyful resistance.'

Getting there
How do I get to El Grito Portland?
By car
Most people drive to El Grito Portland. Check current road and traffic conditions before you set off, and see parking below.
By train
No direct passenger rail to the venue was found. Drive, fly in, or use a shuttle instead.
By bus & public transit
The MAX Red Line runs directly from Portland International Airport (PDX) toward downtown and stops at the Rose Quarter Transit Center directly across from the Moda Center and its Esplanade, where the festival is held. It's one of the easiest airport-to-venue rail links in the US: no transfer needed, and the Blue and Green lines also serve the same Rose Quarter stop for anyone coming from elsewhere in the metro
Book / info →Taxi & rideshare
Standard curbside pickup at PDX; app-quoted fares to the Rose Quarter, which sits just east of the Willamette River off I-5. Simple alternative to MAX, especially with luggage or a group, though the Red Line is usually faster and cheaper for a solo traveler
Book / info →Taxis and rideshare such as Uber and Lyft can be limited near the venue, especially late at night or in rural areas. Agree a pickup point and time in advance and keep a backup plan.
🅿 Parking
On site parking available. Prepay via Rose Quarter garages (day/event rates); prepay optional via third-party apps like SpotHero/JustPark. The Rose Quarter has four large garages around the Moda Center Garden Garage (attached to the arena), Annex, East Broadway and West Broadway plus EV charging. Rates run roughly $10-35 by demand; prepay is optional through the Rose Quarter's own directions page or third-party parking apps. Because El Grito is a free festival and the Rose Quarter is a rail hub, the MAX Red Line is often easier than driving. From I-5, take the Rose Quarter exit and follow signage to the garages
🚙 Car hire
Compare car hire
Low priority for the festival itself it's a free Rose Quarter event with a direct airport rail link, downtown-adjacent walkable hotels and Rose Quarter garages. A rental is relevant mainly for attendees pairing the weekend with wider Oregon travel (Columbia Gorge, coast, wine country)

Portland's inner east side Lloyd District, Kerns, Buckman and the close-in NE/SE neighborhoods has strong short-stay inventory within walking distance or a short MAX/bus ride of the Rose Quarter, often better value for a group than the Convention Center hotels. Mid-September is a pleasant, moderately busy time in Portland; book a walkable east-side unit early. Link points to the Portland Airbnb search
Search Airbnb →No camping at this urban Rose Quarter event. Hipcamp inventory near Portland is out toward the Columbia Gorge, Mount Hood and the countryside/coast (~30-90 min drive): forest sites, farm stays and glamping for attendees pairing the weekend with an Oregon outdoors trip, not a walkable lodging substitute.
