The experience
What's special
Folksmoot: Viking Raid Weekend is an immersive 9th-century Norse living-history event in the fields and woodlands of Charlton, Massachusetts, where - unlike a spectator festival - participants build a temporary Viking village and live in it for the weekend. Days are given over to camp life, hands-on crafts (leather armor, tablet weaving, rune-stone carving), shield-wall combat training, games, feasting and storytelling, all building toward a Saturday live-action raid on 'the Abbey,' loosely inspired by the 793 AD raid on Lindisfarne. Costuming is mandatory (though beginners get on-site help), a $150 ticket includes camping, and the safe combat system welcomes newcomers with no prior experience. The inaugural edition ran May 22-24, 2026.
Costumes & what to wear
Do I need a costume?
Newcomers are reassured that Folksmoot 'values effort and immersion, not perfection': the weekend opens with community kit- and costume-building help, so a beginner can arrive with a partial kit and improve it on site rather than feeling out of place
Costume rules
Costuming is mandatory to support immersion, though a fully completed kit is not required to attend; participants are expected to make a reasonable effort toward Viking or Norse-inspired attire (wool/linen tunic, trousers, leather belt and footwear). Horned helmets, late-period plate armor, quilted gambesons, large non-round shields and modern/anachronistic gear are not permitted
Weapons policy
Period-appropriate weapons and armor (round shields, simple helmets, spears, axes, swords) are used within a controlled, immersive combat safety system; all participants must follow event rules, training requirements and marshal instructions. No prior experience is required and training is provided
Joining in
Folksmoot is explicitly participatory rather than spectator-based: attendees build the village, craft gear, train in shield-wall tactics, and take part in the culminating live-action raid, choosing roles such as warrior, archer, crafter, healer or camp-keeper (with named archetypes like Berserker, Skald and Blacksmith)
