The experience

What's special

Iowa's Latino Heritage Festival is the state's largest and longest-running celebration of Latino culture, a free-to-enter (nominal adult admission, free for children) two-day gathering held every September in downtown Des Moines and produced by the nonprofit Latino Resources, Inc. It spans live Latin music, dance, food vendors, cultural and civic booths, art, and children's activities, honoring the more than twenty Latin American countries represented across Iowa

What people love

Attendees consistently highlight the food and the lively, welcoming atmosphere, describing amazing street tacos and food trucks, good live music and entertainment, and a big, happy, multicultural crowd. Families point to kid-friendly touches like bounce houses. The most common gripes are practical: occasional long lines at popular food stalls and, in the most recent edition, some vendors not showing up

Last time around

The most recent held edition ran the weekend of September 27-28, 2025 in downtown Des Moines, taking place amid heightened concern in the community over federal immigration-enforcement activity. The festival went ahead without incident, and attendees reported a busy, upbeat event with plenty of food, music, and families; some noted that a number of vendors did not turn out, likely tied to those concerns

No private-land camping in downtown Des Moines.
