The fair's name dates to 1913, when the Kansas legislature recognized the Hutchinson event and the city handed its fairgrounds to the state in exchange for funding; the first official Kansas State Fair opened September 13, 1913 under the headline 'Kansas' Real State Fair Has An Auspicious Opening.' A dedicated RV Park on the fairgrounds offers 211 full-service 50-amp hookups year round, a few blocks from the Cosmosphere space museum and the Strataca underground salt mine, though its published nightly and weekly rates apply only outside the Fair's own September run.
