The experience

What's special

The Ligonier Highland Games is a one-day Scottish gathering held each July at Idlewild Park in Ligonier, Pennsylvania, run entirely by volunteers as the main fundraiser of the Clan Donald Educational and Charitable Trust. Held annually since 1959, it packs heavy athletics and the caber toss, EUSPBA-sanctioned pipe bands and massed bands, Highland dancing, clan tents, a keg toss and ladies' haggis hurl, and a Living History area into a single memorable day that goes on rain or shine

What people love

One long-time bagpiping visitor sums up the appeal as great times, great bands, amusing games, good food and fun dog exhibits, and the volunteers are proud that the games press on rain or shine even through wild Western Pennsylvania weather

Last time around

The 67th Ligonier Highland Games ran on Saturday, July 18, 2026 at Idlewild Park and went on rain or shine, with the organizers thanking attendees who stayed through storms that ended in a tornado to close the day

The games

Heavy athletics

Heavy athletics run on the Main Field, described as including the iconic caber toss, stone put and hammer throw, joined by a stonelifting event and competition, a keg toss, a kids' tug of war and the ladies' haggis hurl

Pipe bands & Highland dance

The EUSPBA-sanctioned piping and drumming competition, Highland dancing competition and massed bands all take the Main Field, with solo piping and drumming in the waterpark area, a Friday-evening professional piping event at Holy Trinity Church, and Scottish harp and fiddling competitions in the pavilions

Clans & genealogy

A Scottish clans tent area lets visitors trace which clan their family name is associated with, with genealogy and tartan help; the 2026 honored clan is Clan Galbraith

Taking part

Around the field there are Scottish and Celtic vendors, a weaving demonstration, a shortbread contest, and the all-day Loyalhanna Limited miniature train, with optional add-on admission to Idlewild Park's rides and attractions
