The experience

What's special

The Livingston Songwriter Festival, also billed as Livingston's Yellowstone Songwriter Festival, puts the songwriters themselves on stage for three days in the Yellowstone River valley town of Livingston, Montana. Writers from legends and headliners to rising stars, across country, folk and Americana, play intimate shows in downtown venues and tell the stories behind their songs, with interviews, jam sessions and a workshop for aspiring writers. It is produced by Rocky Mountain Songwriter Festivals, the nonprofit behind the Red Lodge Songwriter Festival and dedicated to music education in local communities. The 2027 festival runs September 30 to October 2.

How it works

The 2027 songwriters are announced on January 1, 2027 and tickets go on sale February 1. In 2026 the festival ran October 1 to 3 with groups of troubadours sharing a stage in downtown spots such as The Attic on North Main, and a Rising Star Pass was valued at $85. Passes, tickets and wristbands are picked up at the festival box office in the lobby of the Livingston Center for Art and Culture on South Main Street. Songwriters can also join a two-day masterclass during the festival; in 2026 it was led by Susan Gibson and Jackson Emmer and limited to 20 writers.

Who it suits

It suits songwriting fans who like to hear the story behind a song in a small room, and aspiring writers who want a workshop or masterclass. Expect intimate shows rather than big-stage spectacle.
