The experience

What's special

Michigan Technological University's Winter Carnival has celebrated Houghton's heavy snowfall since 1922, and Michigan Tech calls it one of the largest annual winter festivals in the nation. Its signature is dozens of huge, intricate snow statues built by student teams around campus and the community, alongside broomball, comedy skits, sleigh rides and human sled dog races. The carnival has been organized by the Blue Key National Honor Society since 1934, and the 2027 edition runs February 3 to 6.

How it works

The statues are the draw for visitors: teams work on them for about a month, and the All-nighter, the last night before judging, sees campus alive with builders putting on final touches, so the morning after is the time to see them finished. The statues stand outdoors around campus and town, and the university's carnival site lists directions and local hotels for visitors. The 2027 schedule is published closer to February.

Who it suits

It suits anyone who enjoys seeing a campus tradition up close: snow statue admirers, broomball and sled dog race watchers, and families who like winter outdoors. Much of it is a student competition spread across campus and town, outdoors in the Upper Peninsula in February, so it rewards visitors happy to bundle up and walk.

Getting there

How do I get to Michigan Tech Winter Carnival?

Houghton sits far up the Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan's Upper Peninsula, hours by road from any large city, so the trip is a long drive or a flight into the small Houghton County airport, which has daily service from Chicago O'Hare. Indian Trails buses serve campus, downtown Houghton and Hancock, and rental cars and a taxi service wait at the airport. Because the snow statues stand around campus and the surrounding community rather than at a single gate, plan on walking between them once you have parked. The options below cover the airport, bus and driving routes in more detail.

Camping & Accommodation

Where do most people stay?

Rooms near campus fill fast for carnival, and booking well ahead, three to six months out, is the advice, so lodging is worth settling before anything else. The lodging list runs from national chains to locally owned motels and cabins across the Keweenaw Peninsula, with more choices farther along the peninsula and as far away as the Marquette area. Compare the options below.

What to bring

Winter Carnival happens outdoors in Houghton's snow, spread across campus and town, so what to bring is mostly warm clothing and a plan for walking between statues.

Walk the statues as a routeThe statues are spread across campus, along Shelden Avenue and into Hancock, so plan on a long walk rather than one stop. A good start is the Rozsa Center, then through campus and down Shelden Avenue, with the fraternities in Hancock and a hot coffee in downtown Houghton or Hancock to break it up.
Dress for the All-NighterThe All-Nighter keeps campus busy until morning with builders, music, food and broomball, plus a DJ booth made of snow and ice where people dance in parkas and snow pants. Dress for hours of standing in the cold, with a warm hat and gloves.
Closing night on the hillIn 2026 the Torchlight Parade and fireworks closed the carnival on Saturday evening, watched from the spot opposite Mont Ripley as torch-carrying skiers drew patterns of light down the hill. Expect to stand outdoors after dark, and check the 2027 schedule for the time.
