The Sterling Renaissance Festival recreates the English town of Warwick in the year 1585 across a 35-acre wooded site in New York's Finger Lakes, a 12-stage interactive theatre wrapped around a crafts fair, food-and-tavern festival, and the Grand Joust A'Plaisance. Marking its 50th year in 2026, it runs seven themed weekends - from an Ale Fest and a Pirate Invasion to a Highland Fling and a fantasy weekend - and layers on ticketed experiences like the Queen's Tea, a five-course Royal Feast, and chapel vow renewals. Over 100 stage and street performers keep entertainment nonstop, and costumes are welcome but never required, with rentals available just inside the gate.

Regulars return year after year for the acts and the jousting - attendees call the performers pretty-good-to-incredible, praise full-speed high-impact jousting, and single out raunchy comedy staples like Arthur Greenleaf Holmes and the Harmless Danger juggling show. Do I need a costume?
No costume required, and everyday clothes are fine, the official guidance is that dressing up is welcome but optional, and on-site rentals at the Royal Rags Shoppe let first-timers try garb without buying. Fantasy, Fairies & the Future weekend explicitly invites outfits 'you wouldn't dare wear anywhere else.'

From SYR the festival is roughly a 40-mile, 55-70 minute drive northwest into rural Cayuga County near Lake Ontario. Rideshare pickup at SYR is at the Arrivals A curbline. There is no transit, rail, or coach to the rural site, so a rideshare covers the whole trip, but book a confirmed return ride before you leave the city, as drivers are sparse out near Sterling and cell coverage at the grounds is spotty
