The experience

What's special

Irmo’s two-day community tradition combines an okra identity with a major parade, free live music, a 5K, rides, artisans and food vendors under the trees at Moore Park

What people love

The Lake Murray-Irmo Woman’s Club remains the preferred okra vendor, preserving a link between the festival name and something visitors can actually taste

Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE) is the nearest commercial airport, about 18 miles southeast of Irmo. Uber and Lyft pick up on the lower level in the baggage-claim area in front of the parking garage; metered taxis queue on the same level. Irmo is a genuine suburban drive northwest of the airport

Accessibility & comfort

What the organiser or venue publishes about getting around, and what they do not.

Disability access

The Irmo Okra Strut publishes no accessibility page and no accessibility statement of any kind. Its FAQ at okrastrut.com/faq gives no ADA, wheelchair, accessible parking, accessible toilet, accessible viewing, companion ticket, ASL or sensory information, so anyone with access needs has to ask the organisers direct.

Read the full notes

What the FAQ does establish about the ground is that paid parking at 10 dollars, card or Apple Pay only, is in the gravel lot on the left as you enter Moore Park at 7473 Church Street, and that the Family Fun Zone is in the grassy field near Shelter 1, so the site is a town park mixing gravel and grass.

Seating exists around Moore Park and in front of the Prisma Health amphitheater, and visitors may bring their own chairs and blankets. Free shuttles run every 20 minutes from the Irmo Wellness Center at 7182 Woodrow St and Union United Methodist Church at 7582 Woodrow St, with free parking at both shuttle lots, starting 6pm Friday and 9am Saturday, but the organiser does not say whether the shuttle vehicles are wheelchair accessible, which matters because the shuttle lots are the free option.

The Saturday morning parade runs on St Andrews Road between Crossroads Intermediate School and Irmo Elementary School, with the road closing at 8.45am. Note that the FAQ states no pets are allowed at the Okra Strut and does not publish a service animal exception, so service animal handlers should confirm in advance.

The festival is free to attend. Contact routes for access questions are the general address [email protected] and the volunteer Okra Strut Chair Dawn Cilley at [email protected]; the festival is run by the Okra Strut Commission with the Town of Irmo

Confirm your specific needs with the organiser's access team before you travel.
