Blithewold Mansion
Blithewold is a 33-acre summer estate on Narragansett Bay at 101 Ferry Road in Bristol, Rhode Island, with a 45-room mansion, gardens and an arboretum around the Great Lawn. Newport Classical stages its concerts in a tent on that lawn, with free first-come parking that can mean a moderate walk, so allow at least 20 minutes to park and reach the tent. Paths are about 80 percent loose gravel, only the mansion's first floor is wheelchair accessible, and picnics are welcome.

Worth knowing before you go
- Overflow parking on the property means a moderate walk to the tent; the festival suggests at least 20 minutes and comfortable shoes.
- Paths are 80 percent semi-loose gravel, so wheelchairs with thicker tyres cope better, and a GRIT Freedom Chair can be borrowed for outdoors.
- No food is served apart from scheduled Afternoon Teas, so bring your own or eat in Bristol five minutes away.

Getting there and parking
Blithewold is at 101 Ferry Road (Route 114) in Bristol, Rhode Island, half an hour or less from Providence, Newport and southeastern Massachusetts and minutes from Roger Williams University. The #60 RIPTA bus stops at the estate.
On-site parking is down the main driveway on the left, with handicap spots in the lot and more handicap parking further down the drive past the green staff door. There are bike racks around the lot and near the Visitors Center; bikes stay off the paths.
Festival-specific · Newport Classical Music FestivalConcert parking is free and first come first served, and carpooling is encouraged because spaces are limited. Overflow parking on the property needs a moderate walk, so allow at least 20 minutes to park and reach the tent. Limited accessible parking can be reserved in advance through [email protected].
In 2026 the gardens and grounds are closed on Mondays; from May 3 to October 25 they open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm and Sunday 10am to 3pm, and the mansion opens Tuesday to Sunday 11am to 3pm from March 28 to October 25. The mansion sometimes closes early for special events. General admission is $22 for adults, free for under-sixes, $6 for ages 6 to 10, $11 for ages 11 to 16 and $50 for a family of two adults and two youths.
Accessibility
The first floor of the mansion and the grounds are wheelchair accessible, with handicap parking, handicap bathrooms at the staff entrance and in the Visitors' Center, benches marked on the map you get on arrival, and a free audio tour that covers both floors of the mansion. A lever-driven GRIT Freedom Chair at the Welcome Center can be borrowed for getting around outdoors.
Only the first floor of the mansion is wheelchair accessible, and the paths are about 80 percent semi-loose gravel, so thicker tyres have an easier time. Newport Classical describes the site as partially wheelchair accessible because of the gravel parking lot and recommends comfortable shoes.

Food, water and what you can bring
Picnicking is welcome: there are tables and chairs around the property and the Great Lawn suits a blanket, and you are asked to take your rubbish with you. Apart from scheduled Afternoon Teas no food is served on site, but downtown Bristol is about five minutes away and your entrance sticker lets you come back in.
A free water bottle refill station is in the Visitors' Center. Weapons are not allowed anywhere on the property, only service animals are admitted, personal photos are encouraged, and professional shoots or drones must be booked ahead.
Sound and sensory
Outdoor programs go ahead in rain if they can move inside or under the events tent, but a threat of lightning closes the tent and cancels the program. Registered guests are emailed at least 12 hours before a cancellation.

A little history
Augustus and Bessie Van Wickle bought the Bristol property in 1894, drawn by a mooring for their new steam yacht and deliberately avoiding fashionable Newport. The estate stayed a family country place until 1976 through the Van Wickle, McKee and Lyon generations, and its furnishings, gardens and archives survive intact.
Newport Classical now sets its concerts in a tent on the Great Lawn, with the gardens and arboretum open to explore before or after.
