Billy Idol, born William Broad in Stanmore, England, in 1955, first rose to prominence as the lead singer of the London punk band Generation X. He moved to New York in 1981 to launch a solo career, becoming a fixture of MTV's early years with hits like "Rebel Yell" and "White Wedding."
