Bio

Carter Brey is an American cellist, born September 19, 1954, who served as Principal Cello of the New York Philharmonic from 1996 until his departure in 2025 after nearly 30 years. He was educated at the Peabody Institute, where he studied with Laurence Lesser and Stephen Kates, and at Yale University with Aldo Parisot. He rose to international attention in 1981 as a prizewinner in the Rostropovich International Cello Competition and pursued a solo career before joining the Philharmonic
