R. Carlos Nakai (born Raymond Carlos Nakai, 1946, Flagstaff, Arizona) is a Navajo-Ute musician regarded as the world's foremost performer on the Native American cedar flute. He took up the flute after a car accident ended his trumpet playing, released his first album in 1983, and went on to record more than 30 albums for Canyon Records, blending traditional melodies with synthesizers, chant and contemporary instrumentation. He has earned multiple Grammy nominations, and his compilation Canyon Trilogy became the first album by a Native American solo flutist to be certified Platinum
