Barefoot and Free Yoga Festival returns to Proud Lake Recreation Area, Commerce Township, MI, Jul 30 to Aug 1, 2027. Froligo tracks current ticket prices, camping, attendee feedback and travel details.

What it stands for

The stated mission is to create immersive gatherings in nature centred on yoga, conscious evolution, play and remembering what it feels like to feel free, with the goal of attendees finding their authentic voice. The organization says it deliberately chooses presenters who are embodying their true selves rather than the "yoga famous", and picks places where the land speaks to it, preferring forests, beaches, rivers and sky over conference rooms and cities. The 2027 page describes the weekend as one of nervous systems softening, laughter around campfires and the reminder that life is meant to be lived with people, and says solo guests, friends and families are all welcome

The experience

What's special

A three-day yoga and wellness festival in the woods of a Michigan state recreation area, run as two campus areas either side of a river bridge. What sets it apart is breadth and permission: roughly 150 offerings across about 15 venues in the recent programme, from arm balance labs and hot hatha to yin, yoga nidra, sound baths, men's and women's circles, archery, throat singing, tea ceremony, incense making and a kids area with its own full schedule. The organizer frames it as spacious rather than packed, and says there is no right way to do it. Camping, glamping, a bunkhouse and VIP lodging are sold by the festival itself and all include the weekend pass

What people love

The festival's published testimonials emphasise going solo and feeling instantly at home, the sheer variety of classes, the woods and swimming under the sun, and the sense of a new annual tradition. One presenter calls it "a magical weekend. Connection, nature, and so much gratitude", and an attendee says "huge variety of classes, and worth every penny. I left refreshed, renewed, and inspired."

Last time around

The 2026 edition ran August 7 to 9 at Proud Lake with about 150 scheduled offerings across roughly 15 venues on two campuses and 117 named teachers, healers and performers, plus a Friday ManiFeast dinner, live music and DJ sets on the Music Stage each night, a VIP Wellness Sanctuary whose sponsor sessions were open to everyone, and a kids programme in the Pixie Playground

The practice

Who it's for

all levels, come as you are. The organizer's line is "all levels, come as you are", and the festival is designed to feel spacious: you can take classes all day, wander the vendor village, lie in the grass, nap, dance or keep it quiet and restorative, with no right way to do it. In practice the recent programme spanned very gentle work (yoga nidra, yin, meditation, journaling, circles, talks) and demanding work (arm balance and inversion labs, power flow, hot hatha, acro, steel mace, cardio dance, archery, an in-water session). Read the individual session note for intensity. Most sessions are first come, first served, and several small venues cap numbers

Vinyasa

Flowing sequences that link breath to movement. Expect to move and sweat.

Vin/Yin

Long, passive floor holds that reach deep tissue. Slow, quiet and meditative.

Yin

Long, passive floor holds that reach deep tissue. Slow, quiet and meditative.

Hatha

Slower, foundational postures held breath by breath. The classic starting point.

Hot Hatha Flow

Slower, foundational postures held breath by breath. The classic starting point.

Kundalini

Breathwork, chanting and repeated movements aimed at energy and focus more than a workout.

Ashtanga

A set sequence practiced with breath, gaze and posture working together. Disciplined and physical.

Yoga Nidra

Guided lying-down meditation on the edge of sleep. No movement at all.

Accessibility & comfort

What the organiser or venue publishes about getting around, and what they do not.

Disability accessThe organiser publishes no accessibility statement, no ADA page, and no policy on accessible parking, accessible toilets, accessible showers or companion tickets. The full sitemap, roughly 330 URLs, contains no accessibility, accessible or ADA page. What the organiser does publish, on its own Festival Info Hub, is movement logistics that a disabled attendee needs in order to judge the site. The festival runs across two wooded campuses, a Proud Lake side called South Campus and a Walled Lake campground side called North Campus, joined by Mermaid Cove and The Bridge. The organiser encourages attendees to walk the trail between the festival grounds and the campground rather than drive back and forth, and says the trail will likely be the easiest and smoothest way to move between areas. A shuttle also runs between the two campuses, but the organiser says nothing at all about whether that shuttle is wheelchair accessible or step free. Because of Sly Road construction the organiser warns that shuttle travel between locations may take about 15 to 20 minutes each way. Parking proximity is not guaranteed: the organiser states that parking closest to check-in is first come, first served, that staff direct arrivals, and that an overflow lot plus shuttle is used when lots fill, so no reserved accessible bay or accessible drop-off point is published. A separate paid VIP Parking add-on is sold explicitly on proximity, and the organiser's VIP page markets it as a way to skip the long walk on dusty road and park up close, which is the only published description of the approach surface and implies a long unpaved walk from general parking. Practice spaces mix outdoor tents with indoor rooms; the organiser's own venue key describes Butterfly Landing as an outdoor center space with patio or grass options, and gives no step-free, firm-surface or slope information for any venue. A Michigan Recreation Passport is required for vehicle entry to the state park, and the organiser notes Proud Lake takes only cash on site for those without one. Nothing is published about chair yoga, adaptive practice, teacher modifications, or ASL. UNKNOWN and worth asking the organiser directly: accessible parking and drop-off, accessible toilets and showers, accessible camping or bunkhouse berths, step-free routes into the tents, the grade and surface of the connecting trail and bridge, and whether the shuttle can carry a wheelchair or mobility scooter. Venue-side detail from the Michigan DNR for Proud Lake Recreation Area could not be read
Quiet & supportOne quiet space is published and it sits behind a paid VIP tier, so it is not a general provision. On its Add-On Experiences page the organiser describes the VIP Wellness Sanctuary, sponsored by Orb Red Light Therapy, as a quiet place for VIP guests to step away from the busyness of the festival, rest, regulate and recharge. It should never be presented as open low sensory provision, because it is VIP only. IMPORTANT CORRECTION: Om Oasis and The Yurt are NOT a quiet or low sensory space. The organiser's own venue key describes it only as a small, intimate yurt space tucked into the woods, limited in size and first come, first served, and the published schedule programmes it back to back across all three days with active sessions including breathwork ceremonies, a 9D breathwork journey, sound healing journeys, laughter yoga, Yin and Yoga Nidra, and a couples intimacy workshop. It is a capacity-capped programming venue, nothing more. No general quiet, sensory or decompression space is published for non-VIP attendees
Shade & heatAn outdoor forest festival: sessions run in a large yoga tent, a yurt, tented circles, outdoor centre spaces, an open field, a fire circle and a riverside bridge area, with indoor classrooms and a cafeteria on the campground side. Classes move indoors if rain affects the outdoor spaces
AgesAll ages. Kids are welcome and festival entry is free for children
ChildrenKids are welcome, festival entry for children is free with registration, and childcare is offered. Children staying in the Shala Bunkhouse need a $60 Kids Bunk purchase for the bed. The 2026 programme ran a dedicated Pixie Playground kids area with kids yoga, storytime yoga, creative workshops and family acro, and on some Saturday slots paired a kids offering with a parallel offering for mothers and caregivers

Recovery and comfort. This is a long, physical, walkable weekend rather than a seated one. The two campus areas are joined by a connector path over a bridge, so the organizer explicitly tells attendees to budget walking time between classes and to arrive early for the smaller campground-side venues, which are first come first served. Michigan weather swings, so layers matter; mosquitoes are a real evening factor near the water and woods; and sturdy shoes beat sandals on the dusty connector road. The recent programme leaned heavily on recovery formats you can drop into when you are done moving: yin, yoga nidra, restorative and sound work, breathwork, self-massage and lymphatic sessions, plus a fire circle and campfires at night. Campers should plan for shared restrooms and water with a paid shower upgrade rather than full facilities

Shop links may earn Froligo a commission; they never change the price you pay.
