The experience

What's special

For the International Snow Sculpture Championships, teams of snow sculptors from around the world come to Breckenridge to carve 12-foot-tall, 25-ton blocks of snow into giant works of art using only hand tools, with no power tools allowed. Over five days and about 94 hours of carving, the sculptures turn downtown into a temporary outdoor gallery, lit up after dark, and visitors vote for the People's Choice Award. The 36th championships run January 23 to February 2, 2027: sculpting week from January 23 to 27, then a week of viewing.

How it works

Everything is free and open to the public, and no reservations are needed. Sculpting begins with opening remarks and a ceremonial cannon start at 10 AM on Saturday, January 23, and runs on and off through Wednesday, January 27, when the finished pieces go on display through February 2. The organizers suggest visiting from Sunday to Tuesday of viewing week for smaller crowds, and coming back after dark to see the sculptures lit. Dates and times depend on the weather.

Who it suits

Suits families and art lovers, since the exhibit is free, outdoors and open around the clock once the carving ends. Visitors who want to watch the sculptors at work need to come in sculpting week, and those who want the finished pieces lit up should come after dark in viewing week.

Getting there

How do I get to International Snow Sculpture Championships (Breckenridge)?

There is no parking at the sculpture site, which sits around the Riverwalk Center in historic downtown Breckenridge, so the planning is about reaching town. The tourism office expects a very busy weekend and encourages carpooling, rideshares and shuttles from Denver and other towns. From the Front Range, the low-cost Snowstang bus runs from Denver's Union Station to Breckenridge Station, the Bustang, Pegasus and Summit Stage services also serve the area, and airport shuttles carry luggage and ski gear door to door. Drivers can use the free lot on the edge of town, served by the town buses, or the overflow lot at the college, where free event shuttles run into town. Once in Breckenridge it is easy to get around without a car, on the free buses and the Main Street Trolley. See the options below.

What to bring

An outdoor exhibit in downtown Breckenridge from late January into early February, free to wander by day or night.

After dark, dress to stand stillEach evening of viewing week the sculptures are lit until 10 PM, and the exhibit never closes. An after-dark visit means standing still outdoors, so dress for that, with a warm coat, hat and gloves, rather than for a quick stroll.
A warm spell can end the show earlyThe last day, February 2, can change if weather affects the stability of the sculptures, so see them earlier in viewing week when the forecast turns warm.
