The experience
What's special
Villain Arts was founded in 1999 by Troy Timpel with a single tattoo convention in Philadelphia and now runs more than 30 shows a year across the United States, describing itself as the largest tattoo festival organiser in the world. The Charlotte Tattoo Arts Convention stop runs at 2500 E Independence Blvd, Charlotte, NC 28205 on dates to be confirmed for the 2027 edition; the organiser's venue page is carried over from the 2026 show (March 13 to 15, 2026), with hours of Friday 2 pm to 11 pm, Saturday 11 am to 11 pm, Sunday 11 am to 8 pm. The organiser lists a discounted room-block rate at Hampton Inn Charlotte Uptown, and Hilton Garden Inn Charlotte Uptown for this stop. The organiser's own FAQ describes each festival as open to all ages, with children under 12 admitted free, while getting tattooed requires being 18 or older with a valid government-issued photo ID, a rule it describes as strictly enforced. Hundreds of artists tattoo live throughout the weekend; many take walk-ups, especially for smaller pieces, while others prefer to book appointments in advance through the show's artist directory or their own social media. Alongside the tattooing, the organiser's shows pair live entertainment, art exhibitions and a vendor marketplace with a full tattoo contest schedule judged on the main stage
What happens on the floor
The core format: artists take a booth for the weekend and work on the open floor, with the public walking through.
Pieces go on in the open, start to finish. You can watch, and talk to artists between clients.
Finished and same-day work is judged on stage in named categories, usually late in the day.
Machines, inks, aftercare, art and clothing. Aimed at artists, but open to anyone through the door.
Stage acts between judging: sideshow, suspension and burlesque are common. Worth knowing before you sit down with a child.
