The Conch Republic Independence Celebration is a ten-day Key West festival marking the Florida Keys' tongue-in-cheek 1982 secession from the United States, when a U.S. Border Patrol blockade on U.S. 1 prompted Mayor Dennis Wardlow to declare the islands the 'Conch Republic.' Each April the self-styled micro-nation 'declares its FUN-dependence' with a citywide program of parades, parties, bar and pool crawls, historic-schooner sails, bed and drag races, and a sea-battle reenactment recalling the original confrontation. Pirate-themed events, such as the Schooner Wharf Pirates Ball and its costume competition, run alongside a closing artisan market, jazz performance and sailing race. The 44th annual celebration ran April 17-26, 2026.
