The experience
What's special
The Decatur Celtic Festival is a new, grass-roots Scottish-Irish festival held each spring at the Wise County Fairgrounds in Decatur, Texas, northwest of Dallas-Fort Worth. Founded in 2023, it now fills a full weekend with a Highland Games competition, a bagpipe competition and massed pipers, a Clan Village with a Kirkin' o' the Tartan and genealogy help, a Medieval Village with battle and blacksmith demonstrations, whiskey and tea tastings, a Celtic Warrior 5k and regional Celtic bands
Last time around
The 2026 Decatur Celtic Festival ran May 2 and 3, 2026 at the Wise County Fairgrounds and introduced the event's first full Highland Games competition, alongside the Decatur Piping Competition, Clan Village activities, a Medieval Village, whiskey tastings and two days of regional Celtic music from bands such as River Driver, Plunk Murray, KinFolk and Misty Posey
The games
Heavy athletics
The 2026 edition introduced the festival's first full Highland Games competition, run in partnership with Scottish Highland Games, with athlete sign-in and a raised sheaf tower before the events begin; a hay and stone display sits in the Clan Village
Pipe bands & Highland dance
The Decatur Piping Competition, run with Fort Worth Scottish Pipes and Drums, features solo grades 1 through 5, a chanter grade and a quartet medley, with massed pipers at the opening ceremony, plus Scottish country dancing by the Denton Celtic Dancers and Irish dancing
Clans & genealogy
A Clan Village hosts clan tents with hand-made goods and family-history help, a Calling of the Clans, a Clan Tug-o-War, a Clan Passport, a Genealogy Research 101 session and a Sunday Kirkin' o' the Tartan
Taking part
Alongside the games the festival offers whiskey and tea tastings, a shortbread baking contest, a fiddle competition, Celtic instrument jam sessions, a Celtic Warrior 5k, sheepdog and rugby demonstrations, Highland cows and a Highland pony, and a full slate of regional Celtic bands including River Driver, Plunk Murray, KinFolk and Misty Posey
