The experience
What's special
El Grito Chicago is a two-day, city-sanctioned Mexican Independence Day festival held each September at Butler Field in Grant Park, featuring live regional Mexican and local acts, an artisan mercado, authentic food and family activities. Revived in its current downtown form in 2024 after roughly a decade without such an event, it was created in part to give the city's Mexican community a central, sanctioned place to celebrate amid tension over downtown car caravans and street closures
What people love
Attendees describe the downtown location as validating and emotional -- a place to celebrate Mexican heritage openly -- and praise the food, music and dancing. Many say the central setting is the festival's biggest strength and hope it grows each year, even as some are frustrated by the street closures that ripple across the city during the celebrations
Last time around (2024)
The 2024 edition ran September 14-15 at Butler Field and drew an estimated 24,000 people with no reported festival-related incidents. Attendees gave it strong reviews for atmosphere and cultural pride -- 'it gives me chills,' one said -- while some voiced frustration at the extensive downtown street closures. The 2025 edition was subsequently called off amid federal immigration-enforcement concerns, with organizers planning a return in 2026

Getting there
How do I get to El Grito Chicago?
By car
Most people drive to El Grito Chicago. Check current road and traffic conditions before you set off, and see parking below.
By train
Suburban and regional attendees can take Metra to Millennium Station or Van Buren Street Station on the Metra Electric line, both at the eastern edge of Grant Park the shortest walk of any rail option to the festival grounds
Book / info →By bus & public transit
From O'Hare (ORD) the Blue Line runs directly downtown; exit at Jackson or Monroe and walk a few blocks east into Grant Park. From Midway (MDW) the Orange Line reaches the Loop. Once downtown, the Red Line (Jackson/Monroe) and the elevated lines at Washington/Wabash are a short walk from the park
Book / info →Taxi & rideshare
Taxis and rideshare serve downtown directly from both airports. During the festival, street closures around Grant Park push rideshare drop-offs to the perimeter along Michigan Ave or Columbus Dr rather than a curb at the gate
Book / info →Taxis and rideshare such as Uber and Lyft can be limited near the venue, especially late at night or in rural areas. Agree a pickup point and time in advance and keep a backup plan.
🅿 Parking
Cost Millennium Garages daily rates typically ~$25-50 downtown; prepay online is cheaper.
🚙 Car hire
Compare car hire
Not needed for this festival El Grito is a downtown, transit-rich Grant Park event with festival-weekend street closures, so a car is a liability at the venue. Car hire only suits attendees pairing the trip with travel beyond the CTA/Metra network

Chicago has a deep short-term-rental market across the South Loop, Loop and Streeterville near Grant Park. As a ticketed one-weekend event El Grito adds some demand, but downtown September rates are driven more by the broader convention/tourism calendar than by this festival alone
Search Airbnb →Hipcamp options around Chicago are sparse and well outside the city (forest-preserve and rural private-land sites an hour or more out) not a realistic alternative to a downtown hotel for a Grant Park event. Listed only for completeness for road-trippers

What the organiser or venue publishes about getting around, and what they do not.
The FAQ has an accessibility section. It is held in Grant Park, with designated rideshare drop off points near the festival entrance and a suggested drop off near the gates at Columbus and Monroe.
Note that chairs are on the prohibited items list, which matters if you need to sit. Nothing is published about ground surface, accessible parking or companion tickets
