The experience
What's special
El Grito Phoenix is a large one-night Mexican Independence Day street festival in downtown Phoenix, staged along Washington Street near 4th Avenue and presented by the City of Phoenix. It centers on the ceremonial 'grito,' regional Mexican and mariachi music, folklorico dance, roughly 100 food and artisan vendors, and a fireworks finale, and has grown into one of the city's largest Hispanic cultural events
Last time around (2024)
The 2024 edition drew a reported 16,000-plus people to Washington Street for an evening of mariachi, folklorico, food from around 100 vendors and a downtown fireworks show. The event has recurred each September and is scheduled to return on September 12, 2026

Getting there
How do I get to El Grito Phoenix?
By car
Most people drive to El Grito Phoenix. Check current road and traffic conditions before you set off, and see parking below.
By train
No direct passenger rail to the venue was found. Drive, fly in, or use a shuttle instead.
By bus & public transit
From any Sky Harbor terminal, ride the free 24-hour PHX Sky Train automated people-mover to the 44th St/Washington Valley Metro Rail station, then take the light rail westbound into downtown Phoenix. The line runs right through the downtown core along Washington and Jefferson Streets, the festival's Washington Street footprint is a short walk from the downtown stops. This is the cheapest and most reliable arrival for the evening street festival, avoiding downtown parking entirely
Book / info βTaxi & rideshare
Rideshare pickup is on the north curb of each Sky Harbor terminal; licensed taxis queue at the terminals. A direct ride into downtown Phoenix is quick but pricier than the Sky Train + light rail combination for a solo traveler
Book / info βTaxis and rideshare such as Uber and Lyft can be limited near the venue, especially late at night or in rural areas. Agree a pickup point and time in advance and keep a backup plan.
π Ώ Parking
No on site parking. Use nearby lots or transit. Prepay via . This is a free open-street festival on Washington Street in the downtown core, not a gated venue with its own lot, park in the surrounding downtown Phoenix public garages and surface lots, most within a few blocks. Given the festival runs into the late evening and the light rail stops steps away, transit or rideshare is the easier arrival than hunting for a downtown space. No festival-specific parking page was found; confirm any Washington Street closures for the Sept 12 footprint nearer the date
π Car hire
Compare car hire
Not needed for the festival itself, it's a free, walkable downtown street festival with the light rail running right past it, but a hire car suits fly-in attendees combining the trip with wider Arizona travel (Sedona, Grand Canyon, other valley events)

Downtown Phoenix, Roosevelt Row, and Garfield have a solid short-term-rental supply within walking or a short light-rail hop of the festival. September is Phoenix's shoulder season (before the winter-visitor surge), so nightly rates tend to sit toward the softer end of the year, though a whole-unit rental still suits a group wanting to be walkable to Washington Street. Link points to the Phoenix Airbnb search
Search Airbnb βHipcamp lists desert and ranch camping across greater Phoenix and out toward the Superstition Mountains and Sonoran Desert preserves, but these sit well outside the urban core, better suited to attendees pairing the festival with an Arizona outdoors trip than as a downtown-adjacent alternative to a hotel.
