The experience
What's special
The 14th annual Knoxville Tattoo Convention runs Friday through Sunday, August 14 to 16, at the Worlds Fair Exhibition Hall, with around 200 artists from across the country working for all three days. The organiser, Living Arts Expo out of Ambition Tattoo, builds the weekend around live tattooing in every major style, from traditional to portrait work, bold color and soft black and gray, alongside burlesque performances, human suspension, tattoo contests, body jewelry and a vendor market. Walk-ups can get tattooed on the spot by browsing artist portfolios in person, or book ahead by finding an attending artist's page and reaching out through their own social or website links. The venue is cashless for admission, taking cash or card at the door, and kids 12 and under get in free. Parking is straightforward: the venue has on-site spaces plus several nearby public lots, including the Blackstone lot's more than 180 free spots. Out of town visitors can book the organiser's host hotel, the Downtown Knoxville Marriott, a short walk from the Convention Center and the University of Tennessee
What happens on the floor
The core format: artists take a booth for the weekend and work on the open floor, with the public walking through.
Pieces go on in the open, start to finish. You can watch, and talk to artists between clients.
Finished and same-day work is judged on stage in named categories, usually late in the day.
Machines, inks, aftercare, art and clothing. Aimed at artists, but open to anyone through the door.
Stage acts between judging: sideshow, suspension and burlesque are common. Worth knowing before you sit down with a child.
Who is tattooing
No artist roster has been published for this edition, so there is no way to pick an artist in advance from the official pages.
