The experience

What's special

The New Hampshire Highland Games & Festival is a three-day Scottish gathering held each September at Loon Mountain Resort in Lincoln, in the heart of the White Mountains. Run by the nonprofit NHSCOT, it brings together heavy athletics, competitive piping and drumming, Highland dance, Scottish fiddle and harp, sheep dog trials, massed pipe bands, a Living History area, and a family-focused Bairns & Weans youth program

What people love

Regulars return for the mountain setting and the spectacle of massed bands, describing the sound of more than a hundred bagpipes playing Amazing Grace together, and they praise the free, efficient parking and shuttle system. It is a spread-out, all-day event on the mountainside, so visitors expecting constant action can find quieter stretches between competitions

The games

Heavy athletics

Scottish heavy athletics run alongside sheep dog trials and The Royal (multi) Mile hill run; all athletes in the Professional, Masters and Amateur events compete by invitation of the NHSCOT Scottish Heavy Athletic Committee

Pipe bands & Highland dance

Competitions cover piping and drumming, Highland dance, Scottish fiddle and Scottish harp, and the Saturday opening ceremonies feature massed pipe bands, with attendees recalling more than a hundred bagpipes playing Amazing Grace at once

Clans & genealogy

Scottish clans gather on the grounds with a Clans' Committee tent, and younger visitors can collect passport stamps at the clan and information tents

Taking part

Beyond the field, visitors can join the Bairns & Weans youth program (crafts, mini-golf, haggis hurling, curling), watch highland cows and Living History reenactors, and buy into special ticketed whisky and beer tastings, a ceilidh dance night, and a Cape Breton dinner concert
