The experience
What's special
The New Jersey Renaissance Faire stages the Shire of New Crossford at the Burlington County Fairegrounds in Columbus, running across four weekends from late May into mid-June. Now in its 16th season, the all-outdoor faire leans hard into live interaction: seven formal stages plus improvisational theatre and pop-up scenes throughout the grounds, live jousting, a human chessboard, and dozens of scheduled shows, with a cast identifiable by chainmail butterfly pins. Beyond the daytime program there are 30-plus artisan merchants, food and a Meade Garden for wine and beer, a Fairy Tea Party and kids' adventures, whiskey and wine tastings, a Deaf and Hard of Hearing Day, dogs welcome with a dog ticket, and separately ticketed adult After Hours shows on Saturday nights. It has been voted among USA Today readers' Top 10 Best Renaissance Faires.
What people love
Attendees describe a small but delightful faire whose cast, vendors, and entertainers more than make up for its size, with the joust and human chessboard singled out as highlights and the day-long interaction with performers a repeated favorite. The smaller crowds compared with the Pennsylvania, Maryland, and New York faires make the knight shows easy to enjoy, and fans say even rainy days are fun. Common caveats: it is compact and can be seen in well under a full day, it uses fairgrounds rather than dedicated permanent grounds, parking can mean a walk without VIP, and some regulars grumble about non-period costumes (Deadpools and furries) at a Renaissance event.
Last time around
The 2026 season ran over four weekends from May 23 to June 14; the faire described it as a record-breaking season, saying attendance records were broken over its course.

All period costume weapons must be peace-tied to remain in the sheath, and weapons that cannot be peace-tied must be rendered completely non-dangerous as determined by NJRF Security or they will not be admitted
Weapons policy
All period costume weapons must be peace-tied to remain in the sheath; weapons that cannot be peace-tied must be rendered completely non-dangerous as determined by NJRF Security, and unsafe weapons or removed peace ties will result in removal from the grounds
