What's special
The New Jersey State Fair, held together with the Sussex County Farm and Horse Show, fills the Sussex County Fairgrounds in Augusta for nine days each summer, a fair rooted in the county horse show that began at Ross's Corner in 1924. Agriculture sits at its center alongside a carnival, covered and indoor attractions, and an Outdoor Entertainment Area that in 2026 ran bull riding, two nights of demolition derby, a monster truck show and tractor and truck pulls. The 2026 fair ran July 31 to August 8, and the 2027 fair runs August 6 to 14.
How it works
Parking is always free. In 2026 the fair opened at 5 PM on its first Friday, with admission just $5 and children 12 and under free that evening, then ran from 10 AM on weekends and noon on weekdays until 10 PM. Grandstand-style shows in the Outdoor Entertainment Area need their own ticket on top of admission, and the 2026 demolition derby nights sold out. Promotions run through the week, such as a Children's Day with sensory-friendly carnival hours, and cash prices are lower than card or online prices. The grounds are smoke-free and pet-free, and wheelchairs and scooters can be rented.

It suits families, farm-animal and 4-H fans and anyone who wants a day of barns, shows and exhibits rather than just a carnival. Visitors looking mainly for rides will find the midway one part of a much bigger agricultural program.
