The experience

What's special

The Ocean State Renaissance Faire bills itself as the only Renaissance faire in Rhode Island, produced by the Contemporary Theater Company along the Saugatucket River in Wakefield. Its riverside, community-theater character sets it apart: a Friday-evening 'Revels on the River' kickoff on the theater patio, a 'choose your court' framing across four courts, four performance stages of musicians, aerialists, storytellers and mermaids, interactive live Dungeons & Dragons shows, costume contests, pirates and magic. Practical touches include allowing outside food and drink, same-day re-entry, air-conditioned indoor cool-off spaces, a free parking shuttle, and free admission for children under 10, with single days at $15.

What people love

As a young, community-run faire, it draws grace more than raves so far. Early attendees have described it as small and rough around the edges, with limited shade and food, but several extend goodwill given that it is an early-year event run largely by a local theater group and hope it grows. Its low $15 single-day price, riverside setting, allowance of outside food and drink, and free parking shuttle are practical points in its favor.

Last time around

Accounts of an early edition were candid: one attendee called it the worst faire they had been to, tiny and hot with no cover and very limited food, while another gave the young, theater-group-run event grace and hoped it would be great by 2027. Press coverage of the faire highlights turkey legs, sword fighting, fire dancing and four performance stages along the river.

Costumes & what to wear

Do I need a costume?

Costumes are welcome but not required, and the faire encourages easy, thrifted outfits rather than expensive ones, so first-timers can come as elaborately or plainly as they like

Costume rules

Costumes should be family-friendly, and visitors must wear shoes at all times. All bladed weapons must be peace-tied and are assessed for safety at admissions; unsafe items may be refused, and realistic firearms (replicas or otherwise) are not permitted. The faire runs costume contests

Weapons policy

All bladed weapons must be peace-tied and are assessed for safety at admissions; items deemed unsafe may be refused, and realistic firearms (replicas or otherwise) are prohibited. Any stage combat not sanctioned by OSRF/CTC will be stopped

Joining in

Attendees can join one of four 'courts', enter costume contests, take part in Ren-Faire karaoke at the Friday Revels, and watch interactive live D&D shows; the faire emphasizes an inclusive, welcoming, harassment-free code of conduct
