The experience
What's special
The Southern Indiana Renaissance Faire is a small, five-weekend spring faire held at Swifty Farms in Seymour, Indiana, run by a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that funds local scholarships and charities. Its calling card is full-contact jousting - real, competitive tilting rather than the scripted theatrical jousts at many faires - alongside armored combat, a royal falconer, and a cast of mermaids, fairies, orcs, druids, magicians, and storytellers. Each weekend carries its own theme (Celtic, Pirate, Viking, and Highland weekends among them), the artisan marketplace runs to soap makers, blacksmiths, leatherworkers, and archery vendors, and food, drink, and $1 water round out an intimate, family-friendly day where it is easy to browse the shops and talk with the makers.
What people love
Attendees single out the jousting as genuinely fun to watch and praise the intimate scale - a small faire where the vendor stalls are easy to browse and limited ticketing keeps it from getting overcrowded, making a good day trip within easy reach of Indianapolis. The honest caveats are its size (many say a single day is enough), a mixed reputation on service and food variety (a low Yelp average, with one reviewer calling out a confusing map and limited food choices), reports of popular Viking and Highland weekends filling to capacity and turning away ticket-holders in past years, and behind-the-scenes disputes that some in the regional faire community have raised about how the event is managed. Shade is more limited than at some larger faires.
Last time around
The faire's official site announced it would return in 2026 with the full schedule to be unveiled; regional listings described the 2026 season as a five-weekend run at Swifty Farms from late April into late May. After the season, the organization opened entertainment proposals for Spring 2027 across all five weekends.
Themed weekends
Held on weekends (Saturday and Sunday, roughly 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM) across five themed weekends in spring, with a different theme each weekend. Recent seasons (2024 and 2026) have been listed as running from late April into late May. A weekend pass is recommended to see everything

Lineup
Costumes & what to wear
Do I need a costume?
Costumes (called garb) are not required but are encouraged and make the day more fun; plenty of first-timers come in ordinary clothes. Beginners are advised to start with thrift-store finds and accessories, adding pieces from the faire's many clothing and accessory vendors over time. A regional tourism guide sums it up: you do not have to dress up
Costume rules
Full-face costume masks are permitted only with prior approval from management or front-gate security and must be removed when entering the grounds and whenever purchasing alcohol (with valid ID); the policy cites past incidents at public events. Guests must remove a mask immediately if asked by any staff member
Weapons policy
The faire stages full-contact jousting (as opposed to the scripted, theatrical jousting at some other faires) plus armored combat. Per an attendee's account of the faire's rules, prop guns are allowed without an orange tip but must stay holstered at all times and are preferably peace-tied
Joining in
A few vendors and some of the entertainment are interactive. Children can take part in a Kids Joust, a Kids Bow and Arrow shoot, and games run by the faire's fairy in the Enchanted Forest
