The experience
What's special
The Ohio Scottish Games & Celtic Festival is held on the fourth Saturday of June at the Cuyahoga County Fairgrounds in Berea, near Cleveland, run since 1977 by the Scottish American Cultural Society of Ohio. Its 50th year in 2027 brings heavy athletics and a Kilted Mile, competitive piping and drumming, Highland dance, fiddle and harp, pipe bands competing all afternoon, a Clan Village with genealogy help, and Celtic and Irish bands, plus falconry, border collies, a Clydesdale and Highland cattle exhibit, a beer tent and whisky tasting
What people love
Regulars come back every year for the bagpipers, the falconry and the unusual vendors, and recommend the shortbread. The festival is still on the smaller side, and one visitor cautions that the heavy-athletics bleachers can be hot in full summer sun
The games
Heavy athletics
Heavy athletics run alongside a Kilted Mile, and the Children's Games are mini highland-athletic competitions and tug of war on both Friday and Saturday
Pipe bands & Highland dance
The games feature Friday professional piping plus competitions in piping, drumming, Highland dance, fiddle and harp, with pipe bands competing all afternoon
Clans & genealogy
A Clan Village invites visitors to pick up a passport at the Genealogy Table and collect stamps from the clans; the event has its own registered Ohio Tartan and names a Chieftain of the Day
Taking part
Beyond the field there are border collies herding sheep, a Clydesdale horse and Highland cattle exhibit, a falconer walking the grounds, British cars and bikes, a beer tent and whisky tasting, Celtic and Irish bands, and Ohio Scottish Arts School workshops and open sessions
