Saranac Lake Winter Carnival

The Saranac Lake Winter Carnival, held since 1897 and one of the oldest winter carnivals in the country, centers on an Ice Palace built by the community from thousands of blocks of lake ice on River Street. Around it, ten days of events fill the village: fireworks, sporting events, a royal court and family activities, each year under a theme. Carnival buttons and posters have recently been drawn by Saranac Lake native and Doonesbury cartoonist Garry Trudeau. The 2027 carnival, themed Wizards and Dragons, runs February 5 to 14.

The Ice Palace is free to walk through and view; the organizers call it a palace, not a castle, because it is built by and for the people. Events run across the village, some needing a sign-up form, so check the schedule for each one. Buying a carnival button or poster helps pay for the carnival. The lot next to the palace is closed to general parking, apart from accessible spaces, so park elsewhere in the village and walk in.
