The experience

What's special

The Skagit Valley Highland Games & Celtic Festival is a two-day Scottish festival held every July at the Skagit County Fairgrounds in Mount Vernon, Washington, and part of a Pacific Northwest and British Columbia competition circuit that keeps the piping, drumming, fiddling and heavy athletics at a high level. Alongside the caber toss and pipe bands, the weekend offers Highland dancing, sheepdog demonstrations, clan booths, a harp tent, beer and whisky gardens and a participatory Celtic Music Rally, drawing more than 10,000 visitors a year

What people love

Regional festival-goers rate Skagit as the largest and most organized of the area's Highland games, and personally the most fun. The main practical caveat is parking, which is limited, so arriving early is worth it

Last time around

The most recent games, the 30th annual, ran July 11-12, 2026 from 9am to 5pm both days at the Skagit County Fairgrounds, with heavy athletics, solo and band piping and drumming, Highland dancing, sheepdog demonstrations, clan booths and whisky gardens

The games

Heavy athletics

Traditional Scottish heavy events are contested both days as part of an annual circuit of Scottish competitions across the Pacific Northwest and British Columbia, so the standard of athletics is high

Pipe bands & Highland dance

Solo bagpiping and drumming competitions and bagpipe bands compete both days, alongside a returning Highland Dance Competition, a new Drum Major Competition, and a Bothy and Harp Tent of interactive music and workshops

Clans & genealogy

Clan booths across the grounds share clan and heritage information with visitors

Taking part

The weekend also brings sheepdog herding demonstrations both days, children's activities from the Children's Museum of Skagit County, beer and whisky gardens with a ticketed Scotch tasting, more than forty food and merchandise vendors, and a participatory Celtic Music Rally where any musician can join a mass performance on the main stage
