The experience

What's special

The South Dakota State Fair has been held in Huron since the first Territorial Fair there in 1885, six days around Labor Day of livestock shows, rodeo events, a carnival, free stages and a grandstand. In 2026 the grandstand opened with two nights of the Tuff Hedeman Bull Bash, then The Fray with X Ambassadors, Nate Smith, Jake Owen and a Labor Day truck and tractor pull, and a ranch rodeo closed the livestock program. The organizer's events also include team roping, breakaway roping and stock dog trials. The 2027 fair runs September 1 to 6.

How it works

In 2026 a day at the gate was $10 for adults and $5 for youth 6 to 15, a family pass covered two adults and four youth for $35, and entry was free after 8 PM most days and after 3 PM on Labor Day. Grandstand concerts cost $50 to $70 and include gate admission when bought before the fair. Daily promotions run through the week, such as free entry for veterans and 4-H members on one day. Campers book whole-fair packages in the satellite campgrounds from June 1, or take a first-come, first-served nightly site in Lot J a few blocks from the grounds.

Who it suits

It suits families and anyone drawn to farm animals, exhibits and fair food, with bull riding and concerts at the grandstand. A day or so covers most of it, and locals who go regularly say the rides are not the reason to come.
