What's special
The Steamboat Springs Winter Carnival has celebrated the town's Western ski heritage every winter since 1914, when it began as a way to lift spirits through the long mountain winter. Hosted by the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club, it brings Ski Town, USA together for a week of snow sports, history and community events at Howelsen Hill, the Tread of Pioneers Museum and on Yampa Street, ending with street events downtown. The 114th carnival, themed Let It Snow!, runs February 2 to 7, 2027.
How it works
The carnival is a week of separate events, most of them community gatherings, with the street events on the closing weekend. Some events need a Winter Carnival button and a ticket, and in 2026 those tickets went on sale about a week ahead and usually sold out. In 2026 the week also included a history happy hour with local Olympians, the museum's ski-history exhibit with the original Lighted Man pyrotechnic suit, a royalty dinner and snow sculptures built by student and community teams. The 2027 schedule is published in December.
