The experience

What's special

WinterWonderGrass brings bluegrass, Americana and roots music to the base of Steamboat Resort for three days each March, part music festival, part beer festival and part family reunion. The 14th annual edition, March 5 to 7, 2027, is led by The String Cheese Incident, Trampled By Turtles, Kitchen Dwellers, Daniel Donato's Cosmic Country and The Jerry Douglas Band, with Lindsay Lou as artist at large and a late-night Grass after Dark program around town. Four stages, three big heated beer halls with daily tastings, a kids' zone and the Coletrain Music Academy fill the grounds, and the organizers say they have played under both bluebird skies and full blizzards.

How it works

Doors open at 2 PM each day with beer, wine and cider tastings until 4 PM, and the main stage runs until 10 PM on Friday and Saturday. The main stage is outdoors, so dress warm and in layers; the heated halls and side stages give a break from the cold. A three-day GA pass is $299, or $349 with a three-day ski and ride pass, while kids 3 to 12 pay $20 and seniors 75 and over get in free with ID. Pick up wristbands early at the free Thursday show at the Gondola Stage, and take the public bus if you can, since the walk from the parking lot is about 10 minutes and can be slick.

Who it suits

It suits bluegrass, Americana and roots fans who like their music with snow and mountains around it, and skiers happy to ride by day and hear bands by night. Families get a heated kids' zone, and beer fans get daily tastings in the heated tents. The main stage is outdoors, so anyone who dislikes standing in the cold will spend more time in the heated tents and side stages.

Camping & Accommodation

Where do most people stay?

Lodging runs from Steamboat Resort hotels to short-term rentals and an RV park, and a resort discount applies to festival weekend stays with a four-night minimum, so the best time to book is early. The free public bus links the rest of town to the festival, which makes a place away from the mountain workable too. Check out each of the options below.

What to bring

An outdoor mountain festival in early March: a main stage in a resort parking lot, heated tents to retreat to, and a slick walk from the buses.

Layers for the main stageThe main stage is outdoors, so dress warm and in layers, and treat the heated beer tents and the coffee depot as places to thaw out between sets. Ski or snowboard clothing works well after dark.
Boots with gripThe path between the bus terminal, the gondola and the festival lot can be slick, so wear boots with a good sole and take your time on the way in and out.
Bring a cup and an empty bottleThere is a free water station by the vendors, so carry an empty resealable bottle rather than buying water. Each guest is given a reusable cup on arrival, and it needs to come back with you every day.
Late shows are separateGrass after Dark starts when the main stage ends, in the Grand Ballroom a walk away from the grounds, and it uses special tickets rather than your festival wristband.

Entry rules

ChildrenChildren 2 and under are free and kids 3 to 12 pay $20; a Town Hall Kids Zone runs from 2 to 9 PM daily with face painting, hula hooping and guest artists.

Accessibility & comfort

What the organizer or venue publishes about getting around, and what they do not.

Disability accessAn ADA stage viewing area is reserved for guests using wheelchairs and mobility devices; reasonable folding chairs are allowed there and the festival can provide chairs.

Confirm your specific needs with the organizer's access team before you travel.
