John McLaughlin (born January 4, 1942, in Doncaster, Yorkshire, England) is an English guitarist, bandleader and composer regarded as a pioneer of jazz fusion. After playing on Miles Davis's electric albums including Bitches Brew, he formed the Mahavishnu Orchestra in 1971, fusing jazz and rock with Indian classical influences. His later work has spanned acoustic, world and flamenco-influenced projects such as Shakti.
