Michele Rosewoman is an Oakland-born pianist and composer regarded as one of the most innovative voices in contemporary jazz, drawing deeply on Afro-Cuban traditions alongside post-bop and avant-garde improvisation. Quintessence, her primary vehicle as a pianist, composer, and bandleader, debuted at New York's Cooper Union Great Hall in 1986. The ensemble has featured players such as Steve Coleman, Greg Osby, Gary Thomas, Miguel Zenon, Robin Eubanks, and Tyshawn Sorey
