Taj Mahal (born Henry St. Claire Fredericks Jr., May 17, 1942, in Harlem, New York City) is an American blues musician, singer and multi-instrumentalist. Beginning in the 1960s, he helped broaden the blues by incorporating sounds from the Caribbean, Africa, Hawaii and the South Pacific. He co-founded the band Rising Sons with Ry Cooder before launching a long solo career and has won multiple Grammy Awards.
