One stop on a circuit of 19 conventions run to the same format by Villain Arts Inc.
Age, licensing and hygiene
The organizer statements here are CIRCUIT-WIDE Villain Arts policy from its vendor policies, consent waiver and FAQ, not anything published for Asheville specifically; Asheville is named as a selectable show on the consent waiver, which is what ties the circuit policy to this event. The North Carolina and Buncombe County material is statute and county process, recorded as the legal backdrop, NOT as an organizer or authority claim about this convention
Admission is all ages and children under 12 are free. To be tattooed you must be 18 or older with a valid government-issued photo ID; the organizer states there are no exceptions, that this is a legal requirement and that it is strictly enforced. North Carolina law backs that with no room to move: it is a Class 2 misdemeanour to tattoo any part of the body of a person under 18, and the state's parental-consent exception applies to piercing only, not to tattooing. A parent cannot consent a minor into a tattoo in North Carolina. The circuit's consent waiver enforces the same floor mechanically, refusing an age below 18 and requiring photo ID front and back
Villain Arts places health-department compliance on the booth holder by contract: its vendor policies state the licensee agrees to provide and pay all location and establishment fees, and artists license fees and or permits required by the local health department, and that the vendor agrees to comply with and follow all sterilization standards set forth by local health licensing requirements. North Carolina requires a tattoo artist permit from the local health department for each location where the artist works, and Buncombe County publishes a dedicated guest artist tattoo artist application, which is the mechanism a visiting convention artist would use. Neither Villain Arts nor Buncombe County publishes any statement specific to this convention, and the organizer claims no verification of its own
Vendor policy, circuit-wide, verbatim: "The Vendor, if tattooing on premises, agrees to use single-use needles and inks, use certified sharps container to dispose of used needles, follow recognized professional tattooing standards, and maintain a clean workstation. This includes properly bagging contaminated waste each day for removal and policing the booth area before final departure for any tattooing product or materials." Each booth is supplied with a sharps container, distilled water, a trash bin and liner, and a table with a sanitized vinyl cover. This is a contractual undertaking by booth holders, not an organizer inspection regime
Villain Arts runs a single online consent waiver covering every show on its circuit, and Asheville is one of the shows selectable on the form. Before a procedure the form requires the client's photo ID uploaded front and back, a date of birth and an age entered as a number the form restricts to between 18 and 120, and the artist's studio temporary licence number. It also records the sterilization date or package and lot number used during the procedure, and the source, manufacturer and lot number of the ink. The client certifies being sober, free from drugs and alcohol, not under the influence of any controlled substance, having eaten within the last four hours, and being at least 18 years of age. Aftercare guidance in the form directs the client to consult a licensed healthcare professional at the first sign of abnormal inflammation, swelling or possible infection
North Carolina permits tattoo artists per location through the local health department. Buncombe County publishes a guest artist tattoo artist application at https://www.buncombecounty.org/common/health/guest-artist-tattoo-artist-application.pdf. No permit number for this event is published by anyone
The organiser publishes nothing on a Buncombe County permit number or authority statement for this specific convention, autoclave procedure, bloodborne pathogen training and any organizer-run inspection or verification of booth compliance. Ask the artist you are booking with, and expect a licensed booth to answer without hesitating.

What's special
Asheville Tattoo Arts Festival is a Villain Arts tattoo convention held September 11 to 13, 2026. The organizer describes its festivals as a celebration of tattoo culture bringing together world class tattoo artists, entertainers, vendors and tattoo enthusiasts under one roof, with hundreds of artists tattooing live throughout the event, tattoo contests judged across the weekend, and artist and vendor booths on the event floor. Admission is separate from the cost of a tattoo, and tickets are refundable up to 24 hours before the event begins. Getting tattooed requires being 18 or older with valid photo ID, while general attendance is open to all ages with free entry for kids under 12
What happens on the floor
The core format: artists take a booth for the weekend and work on the open floor, with the public walking through.
Pieces go on in the open, start to finish. You can watch, and talk to artists between clients.
Finished and same-day work is judged on stage in named categories, usually late in the day.
Machines, inks, aftercare, art and clothing. Aimed at artists, but open to anyone through the door.
Getting tattooed here
Admission gets you through the door, not into a chair. Tattoo work is arranged with the artist, not with the show.
Booking is handled directly with the artist, not through the organizer. Villain Arts directs visitors to its master directory or the city event page, then to the artist's own social media or website with the design idea, size, placement and references; artists reply with availability, pricing and any deposit requirement
Many artists leave time for walk-up tattoos, especially smaller pieces, while others book up completely in advance. For something larger, specific, or from a particular artist, the organizer advises contacting them ahead of time. No per-artist books-open or walk-up state is published for anyone
Who is tattooing
Featured subset only. No Instagram handle or studio published for any individual artist
22 artists are listed for this edition, by name only, which is all the organiser publishes.

Around the tattooing
On the entertainment stage
The Asheville page describes each day offering live entertainment including human suspension, a contortionist archer, sword swallowing and sideshow burlesque. That sentence is Villain Arts' standard circuit blurb and appears beyond Asheville, so it is recorded as the organizer's description rather than an Asheville-specific lineup. The five named acts above ARE listed on the Asheville page. No performance times are published
- Cenobyte Suspension Crew
- Captain & Maybelle
- Verona Fink
- James Maltman
- Camille Zamboni
What it costs
Admission is the only price the show sets. Tattoo prices are set by each artist and are separate from admission; the Villain Arts circuit FAQ gives a general guide of roughly $100-300 small, $300-800 medium, $1,000 plus for large work, with a show minimum of $100 per tattoo.
Extras, bought separately
If you are exhibiting
Booth and vendor fees are what the show charges artists and traders. They are not visitor prices.
Circuit-wide Villain Arts booth structure: 10x10 booth $750 fitting 2 artists; includes 3 badges, tables, chairs, electricity, sharps container and consent/aftercare forms. Artist-side fee, not a visitor price
Secondary-market listings for this show exist and are far above face value, with one major resale site showing general admission from $65 against a $20 door price. Villain Arts' own terms of service state that resale or listing of its tickets on other platforms is expressly forbidden and that tickets purchased on other platforms cannot be guaranteed as admissible or covered by its refund policy. Buy from the official show page
The market and the food
The organizer's FAQ lists food and beverage vending among the services it does not accept for artist and vendor booths at its shows; no separate food-vendor program is described in the official materials reviewed for this event
