The experience
What's special
The Battle of Cedar Creek Reenactment is the Cedar Creek Battlefield Foundation's largest annual fundraiser, staged on the actual historic battlefield in Middletown, Virginia on the third weekend of October, close to the October 19, 1864 anniversary. For over thirty years the Foundation has hosted the large-scale event, in which more than a thousand reenactors recreate the last major battle in the Shenandoah Valley - the Confederate Morning Assault on Saturday and the Federal Afternoon Counterattack on Sunday - alongside cavalry, artillery and infantry in camp, music, symposia and medical, military and civilian demonstrations.
Costumes & what to wear
Costume rules
Reenactors wear 1860s period-correct uniforms and carry period arms; registration rules and policies are published in the participant FAQ. Spectators are not required to dress in period
Weapons policy

Historical context
This is a living-history reenactment of the Battle of Cedar Creek (also called Belle Grove), fought in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley on October 19, 1864, the last major battle in the Valley during the American Civil War. Historians identify slavery as the central cause of the American Civil War; its outcomes included the emancipation of nearly four million enslaved people.
