Revolutionary War Weekend turns Mount Vernon's serene 12-acre field into an 18th-century military encampment. Reenactors portraying Continentals, Redcoats, and Hessians conduct drills and period tactics; General George Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette appear for a presentation at 1 p.m. on the bowling green each day; and civilian reenactors depict the seamstresses, washerwomen, and sutlers who traveled with the army. Held on the grounds of Washington's estate, the weekend pairs the reenactment with the estate's year-round interpretation of the mansion, gardens, and the lives of the enslaved community who built and operated the plantation

Historical context
This is a living-history reenactment of the American Revolution staged on the grounds of George Washington's Mount Vernon, with reenactors portraying Continental, British, and Hessian forces and appearances by Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette. Mount Vernon was a plantation worked by enslaved people: in 1799 more than 300 enslaved people lived and worked on the estate's five farms. Mount Vernon interprets this history directly, offering a free daily Enslaved People of Mount Vernon tour that explores the lives and contributions of the enslaved community who built and operated the estate.
